Homeopathy: supporting children when the weather turns colder
Updated: Oct 6

There is something about that first real change in the weather.
The mornings are colder, the evenings are drawing in, and suddenly you hear that familiar little cough from the bedroom.
If you are a mum, you probably know the pattern. A sniffle starts, then a runny nose, perhaps a cough follows, sleep becomes unsettled and you start wondering how long this one is going to last.
It is something I see regularly in my clinic as the seasons change.
And while coughs and colds are a normal part of childhood, I often find that mums notice the earliest signs long before an illness really gets going. A change in their child's voice. A little clinginess. Less energy. That look that tells you they are not quite themselves.
Those details matter.
I don't treat "a cough"

One of the things I love about homeopathy is that we don't simply look at the name of the complaint.
Two children can both have a cough and need completely different prescriptions.
I have recently prescribed Bryonia, for example, where the cough was dry and painful, movement made things worse and the child simply wanted to lie still.
Another child needed Pulsatilla, with a changeable catarrhal picture and a very clingy child who wanted plenty of comfort and company.
Aconite has been relevant where symptoms came on suddenly after exposure to cold, dry air, with the child becoming noticeably unsettled.
And I have prescribed Hepar sulph where there was marked sensitivity to cold air or drafts and a strong desire to be kept warm.
Then there are children who become exceptionally irritable and sensitive when they are unwell, where Chamomilla may be the closer match.
These are all very different pictures, even though you could simply describe them as "winter coughs and colds".
That is the bit I want mums to understand.
I am not thinking, "cough equals Bryonia".
I am looking at the whole picture.
So what should you look out for?
You don't need to become an amateur homeopath!
But you can become a really good observer.
When your child starts becoming unwell, notice what happened first.
Did it come on suddenly or gradually?
What does the cough actually sound like?
Is it dry or productive?
Does movement make it worse? Does warmth help?
Do they want to be held, or would they rather be left alone?
Are they restless or unusually quiet?
How are they sleeping?
Are they thirsty?
These little observations can be surprisingly useful.
Children don't always have the words to explain exactly how they feel, but their behaviour often tells us a great deal.
And as a mum, you probably know those subtle changes better than anyone.
When the seasons keep repeating the same story
Sometimes it is not just one winter illness that brings a family to see me.
A mum will say, "Every time the weather changes, we get the same thing."
That is when I like to step back and look at the bigger picture.
How often is the child becoming unwell?
Is there a recurring pattern?
How do they recover?
Does the same type of cough keep returning?
What else is going on around them?
Homeopathy is very individual, and the aim is to understand the child's particular pattern rather than simply giving them something for the symptom in front of us.
A few simple things still matter
Of course, homeopathy is only one part of supporting a child through the colder months.
Good food, enough fluids, sleep, fresh air and plenty of rest still matter. Warm, nourishing meals can be especially welcome as the seasons change, and I often talk to mums about nutrition and everyday habits alongside homeopathic care.
And sometimes your child simply needs you.
A quiet afternoon. A warm drink. An early night. A cuddle on the sofa.
There is no need to make everything complicated.
From my clinic to your home

One of the things I enjoy most about working with children is seeing just how individual they are.
Siblings can have the same bug and present completely differently. One wants to be wrapped up and left alone. Another wants constant cuddles. One is restless, another sleepy. One coughs whenever they move, another coughs more when they lie down.
Those differences are not just interesting details. In homeopathy, they help us understand the individual picture.
So when the colder weather arrives and you hear that first sniffle, don't panic.
Observe.
Notice the little things.
You know your child better than anyone, and sometimes those small details tell us far more than the label of the illness ever could.
And if you are unsure or concerned about your child's symptoms, seek appropriate medical advice. Homeopathy can sit alongside conventional healthcare, and I never advise parents to stop prescribed medication or delay medical attention.
